Crawford County occupies the northwestern corner of Pennsylvania, with Meadville as the county seat. The county’s trial court system centers on the Court of Common Pleas, which maintains general jurisdiction over criminal, civil, family, and orphans’ court matters, alongside four Magisterial District Courts that handle preliminary hearings, minor offenses, and small claims. Each of these courts generates records that are regularly sought by attorneys, litigants, employers, and members of the public for legal, personal, and business purposes.
Searching for court records in Pennsylvania can be done through several avenues, including local clerk offices, courthouse visits, and statewide electronic systems. PennsylvaniaCourts.us provides a directory of courts and links to the Unified Judicial System’s online tools, which may assist in locating publicly available case information. The UJS Web Portal, county-maintained search applications, and the individual offices of the Clerk of Courts, Prothonotary, and Register of Wills each offer distinct pathways to accessing Crawford County records.
How to Look Up a Court Case in Crawford County?
The most widely used online method is the UJS Web Portal, maintained by Pennsylvania’s Unified Judicial System. This free tool allows users to search statewide court dockets — including those from Crawford County — by case number, participant name, organization name, offense tracking number, or police incident number. Results display docket entries, charges, party names, hearing dates, and case dispositions for both Common Pleas and Magisterial District Court cases.
For civil cases specifically, the Crawford County Prothonotary’s office offers its own Public Use Software, which allows searches by docket number or party name. This tool is not a substitute for legal documentation — certified copies must be obtained directly from the Prothonotary’s office.
Probate and estate records can be searched through the Landex Remote Access Portal, linked from the Crawford County Register & Recorder’s website. Users can create an account and search estate records from 1991 to the present, with probated estate indexes reaching back to 1800.

Are Court Records Public in Crawford County?
Pennsylvania establishes a strong presumption in favor of public access to court records. The Pennsylvania Right-to-Know Law affirms the public’s right to access government records, including documents in the possession of county offices. For judicial records specifically, the Case Records Public Access Policy of the Unified Judicial System governs what case information may be viewed, copied, or obtained by the public.
Records in the Crawford County Prothonotary’s office are available to the public, with the exception of court-ordered sealed records. The Register of Wills confirms that all estate records on file are public.
The Public Access Policy restricts access to certain categories of information:
- Confidential information — Social Security numbers, financial account numbers, driver’s license or state identification numbers, and dates of birth of minor children must be redacted from publicly filed documents using a Confidential Information Form
- Sealed and expunged records — Records that have been sealed by court order or legally expunged are not accessible to the public
- Juvenile records — Case files involving minors are confidential under Pennsylvania law
- Mental health proceedings — Records from involuntary commitment and related proceedings are restricted
- Victim information — Identifying details about crime victims may be withheld
- Active investigations — Records connected to ongoing law enforcement or judicial investigations may be exempt from disclosure
