Greene County, Pennsylvania sits in the southwestern corner of the state along the West Virginia border, with Waynesburg as its county seat. The county’s court system is organized around the Court of Common Pleas of the 13th Judicial District, which serves as the primary trial court for major civil and criminal matters, alongside a network of Magisterial District Courts handling smaller disputes and preliminary criminal proceedings. Court records generated through these courts are primarily maintained by two distinct county offices — the Prothonotary (civil division) and the Clerk of Courts (criminal division) — both located at the Greene County Courthouse in Waynesburg.
Pennsylvania residents can look up court case information through several channels, including in-person visits to county offices, public access terminals at the courthouse, and online tools offered by the state judiciary. PennsylvaniaCourts.us can assist in locating publicly available case information from Greene County and other Pennsylvania jurisdictions. The statewide UJS Portal also provides free docket sheet searches covering Common Pleas and Magisterial District Court cases.
How to Look Up a Court Case in Greene County?
Greene County maintains two separate online search systems depending on the type of case:
Statewide UJS Portal (Criminal, Appellate, and MDJ Cases)
The UJS Portal — operated by the Unified Judicial System of Pennsylvania — allows free public searching of docket sheets for criminal Court of Common Pleas cases, Magisterial District Court cases, and appellate matters. Search options include party name, case number, calendar event, and attorney. No account is required.
Greene County Civil Case Search (Civil Division)
For civil cases, the Prothonotary’s Office provides a dedicated online search at greenecountypa.gov/civilsearch. Records dating from 1996 onward are searchable at no charge. Cases before 1996 require an in-person visit to search miscellaneous indices at the office. Docket entries with an attachment icon include viewable documents, subject to the Public Access Policy of the Unified Judicial System. Abuse and mental health cases do not appear in the civil search system.
In-Person and Mail Access
All Common Pleas courts are located at the Greene County Courthouse. Visitors can access case files and request copies during regular business hours. Archived files older than approximately 2006 must be requested in advance — they are pulled every Wednesday morning and remain available for one week.
For civil case copies by mail, send a written request with party names, approximate filing year, and a check payable to the Prothonotary of Greene County. A certified copy of a divorce decree costs $7.00 by mail.

Are Court Records Public in Greene County?
Pennsylvania’s Right-to-Know Law (RTKL), codified at 65 P.S. §§ 67.101 et seq., establishes a broad presumption of public access to government records, including most court documents. Records held by government agencies — including the courts — are generally open to public inspection and copying upon request and payment of applicable fees.
The Unified Judicial System of Pennsylvania also maintains a separate Public Access Policy that governs what case information may be viewed through court docket systems. This policy controls online access through both the UJS Portal and the Greene County civil search tool.
Records That Are Restricted or Confidential
Certain categories of records are withheld from public access under Pennsylvania law or court order:
- Juvenile records — confidential under 42 Pa.C.S. § 6307; court files concerning a child are not disclosed to the public unless specific statutory exceptions apply (e.g., certain adjudicated delinquency matters involving serious offenses)
- Mental health proceedings — excluded entirely from the civil docket search; subject to state law confidentiality protections
- Abuse cases — Protection from Abuse (PFA) files are not publicly searchable online
- Expunged or sealed records — removed from public access by court order
- Certain family court proceedings — custody and dependency matters may have restricted access provisions
Right-to-Know requests directed to the Greene County Sheriff’s Office should be sent to the County’s Chief Clerk, Jeff Marshall, at jmarshall@co.greene.pa.us.
